BOOK-CATALOGUE (English/Greek), Athens: Papasotiriou, 2011

find book@Papasotiriou bookstores

The Against All Odds project is a mechanism that produces thoughts, ideas and actions. Specifically, AAO is: first, a ‘think-tank’: it promotes debate on occurring issues which need to be addressed within the framework of Architecture (in its wider understanding as spatial practice) regarding society, ecology and culture. Second, a ‘disseminator of ideas’: it raises public awareness on the value of Architecture (as spatial practice) in resolving significant current issues, as well as in offering a podium for the promotion of projects that address its main philosophy. Third, a ‘do-tank’: it sets targets for the fulfillment of which it creates partnership models with organizations, educational institutions and designers, becoming their strategic partner.

This book presents the first of the Against All Odds project series of actions and events that examines through the collective work of a big group of people the subject Ethics / Aesthetics. Views and theses of significant theoreticians, architects, designers and artists are presented as they were recorded during the two interdisciplinary conferences realized by the AAO project in January and in June 2011, as well as the pioneer projects and artworks around the world that were the material of the main exhibition “Ethics / Aesthetics” at the Benaki Museum, Pireos Annex, from 8 June to 31 July 2011.

Additionally, the book presents the results of the academic workshops with urban subjects that were organized from March to May 2011 by the AAO project with Parsons The New School For Design (New York), University Paris 8/CITU Research Center of Paragraphe Laboratory, National Technical University of Athens, University of Thessaly and Athens School of Fine Arts, some of them comprising the urban action “Athens Here and Now”, interactive and video artworks realized in the historical center of Athens. Finally, the book includes the artworks of the parallel group show of Greek contemporary artists “Slow Down Rooms” as well as other performance actions. All of the above are connected and have as a main subject the realization of works with a direct social impact, through a spirit of evaluation of the contemporary social and ecological problems and the need to react by serving a feeling of “emergency”. The global framework of discourse is correlated with the local parameter and application.

The AAO project is organized by 4 Life Strategies. AAO’s concept and curator at large is architect Lina Stergiou who also edited the book.

4 LIFE STRATEGIES NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION

4 LIFE STRATEGIES is a non-profit organization established in 2011 with the mission to strategically and proactively design actions for life. Founding members are the new media artist Maurice Benayoun and Lina Stergiou. 4 Life Strategies is the body to conceive and implement the Against All Odds project.

AAO PROJECT started in 2011 and is a triennial series of actions and events with the philosophy to promote design and art as action of relief, as source of inspiration and as tool for building equality.

More specifically, AAO is:
first, a ‘think-tank’: to promote debate on occurring social, cultural and ecological issues which need to be addressed by territorial practices.
second, a ‘disseminator of ideas’: to raise public awareness on the value of Architecture (as territorial practice) in resolving significant current issues, as well as in offering a podium for the promotion of projects that address its main philosophy.
third, a ‘do-tank’: to become a strategic partner as well as a trigger for the cooperation among educational institutions, architects and authorities offering the appropriate framework for an outcome that will directly or indirectly benefit society.

The first series of actions and events of AAO is titled Ethics/Aesthetics. Ethics / Aesthetics has the objective to explore the moral values related to territorial practices, to research and suggest solutions on social and ecological issues and to communicate the conclusions to the public. Ethics/Aesthetics unfolded in a series of events from January to July 2011 reflecting an interdisciplinary approach:

Two international conferences (with academics, architectural and art historians and critics, architects, designers and artists / Benaki Museum Athens, Athens School of Fine Arts); one main and two parallel exhibitions (with 40 participants from America, Asia and Europe, Benaki Museum Athens), five academic workshops (with Parsons The New School For Design New York, National Technical University of Athens, University of Paris 8 and Athens School of Fine Arts) and three performance-actions in public spaces in the center of Athens, the internet and the Benaki Museum (during Athens Art Week/Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the famous Futur en Seine/Paris).

Sponsors of the AAO project include companies such as IKEA, Cosmote telecommunications, Autodesk, Pernod-Ricard, Attiki Odos S.A., Coca-Cola, International Volunteer Company and Embassies, such as the US Embassy and the Embassy of Holland and Spain in Athens.

ΑΑΟ: Ethics / Aesthetics project is organized under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry for the Environment, Energy & Climate Change, the Hellenic Ministry for Culture & Tourism, the United Nations’ Development Program (UNDP), the US Embassy in Athens, the Embassy of Spain and Holland in Athens, the City of Athens Tourism and Economic Development Company (ATEDCo), the Technical Chamber of Greece, the Society of Graduate Architects-Panhellenic Architects’ Association (SADAS-PEA) and the Hellenic Institute of Architecture (EIA).

RESEARCH

2007 – 2012 “Architectural Avant-Garde” Ph.D. Research in progress. By combining architectural with cultural, sociological and political analysis the dissertation examines what motivates and reinforces the architectural avant-garde, elaborates its politics, and critically looks at the architectural profession through avant-garde’s meaning and function.

2004 “Athens: a case of ‘Symptomatic’ Ugliness. The backlash of Moderation”. Research presented in two public talks, at Princeton University, program in Hellenic Studies, and Yale University, Council on European Studies. This study explored the notion of moderation, a ninetieth century social virtue and filter through which neoclassical Athens was perceived and at the same time formed. It argued that moderation, as a bare model in the modern period, was reflected in the urban formation. It suggested that moderation, as a deep rooted collective attitude or as an expectation, not only motivated the formation of the Athenian urban environment until today but also the translation of the buildings and the city alike into aesthetic terms by the public.

New public green space strategy for Athens

The apartment block unit: The apartment block unit is the prevailing building type in Athens. It is always in a transitory phase, either during its years-long construction phase, or with additions after the completion of its construction.

Activation of the apartment block unit: The basic philosophy of ‘Publicgreen_Order’ is to activate the negatively perceived but so common in Athens apartment building construction sites with their transformation into transient or permanent vertical parks.

Private construction sites as new Public Parks: In a period of time where the increase of the state surveillance, the reality shows and other phenomena render the private-public boundaries transparent,
‘Publicgreen_Order’ suggests private construction sites to be turned into public green spaces. The info of the ‘moving green’ is given on the internet and its booking is made online. ‘Publicgreen_Order’ is mainly addressed to marginalized and immigration groups so as to satisfy their social and ceremonial needs. Its private connotation helps lifting the public space in the eyes of the citizens, encourage its use, as well as introduce a distinct kind of collective experience.

Flexible Strategies versus Urban Planning: ‘Publicgreen_Order’ is about short-term, ephemeral architectural interventions that complement permanent ones. It suggests a new urban regeneration tool for
Athens. It is a flexible response to the mutable and always in process urban condition. The new urban practice should be prospective and performative rather than directive and prescriptive.

Acquisition of Urban Vertical Parks: Public authorities rent the construction sites where building process is temporarily stopped up. This period is usually long due to the owners’ economic hardship. This gives the owners the budget to complete later on their construction. In case they decide the termination of the construction process authorities can buy the structure. Buying and transforming it into park is less expensive than pulling it down to create a classical park. Also many apartment buildings in the center are abandoned. Authorities can expropriate them an transform them into permanent green spaces.

Into the Specifics. A Public Guide: Discover private time in a green relaxing place in the city of Athens by visiting www.Publicgreen_Order.gr or go to your nearest municipal center.

The site gives you information where in your neighbourhood the new vertical parks are located. Also which of them have facilities as kitchen and bathroom for your social, ceremonial or religious needs.

Fill in your choices for the location (center or close to your home), total area, floor (terrace or lower floor), and space arrangement. The new public parks can meet all your individual needs.

Vertical parks are open and accessible to you 24 hours. Parks with equipped facilities have controlled access and therefore need to be booked. This can be done online or with the filling in of an application form. If spaces are booked for long periods of time they will be free of charge but green’s maintenance will be required.
