Lina Stergiou, ed., Against All Odds: Ethics/Aesthetics (Athens: Benaki Museum and Papasotiriou, 2011), English/Greek, 433 pages

With the mission to expand architectural profession’s role within society through reshaping its social and ecological contributions to the cityscape and its social fabric, AAO: Ethics/Aesthetics included a number of experimental actions, conferences, academic workshops and exhibitions. The book documents most of the above.

First, the standpoint on the subject of significant theoreticians, architects, designers and artists – as presented in the two interdisciplinary international conferences. Second, the pioneering projects of architecture, design and art around the world that were the material of the exhibitions at the Benaki Museum, Athens, from 8 June to 31 July 2011. Third, the book presents the results of the academic workshops with urban subjects that were organized from March to May 2011 in collaboration with Parsons The New School For Design (New York), the University Paris 8/CITU Research Center of Paragraphe Laboratory, the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Thessaly, and the Athens School of Fine Arts. Some of them comprised the urban action ‘Athens Here and Now,’ interactive and video artworks realized in the historical center of Athens Finally, the book includes the urban and performance actions of the project.

All of the above are connected and have as a main subject the realization of works with a direct social impact, through a spirit of evaluation of the contemporary social and ecological problems and the need to react by serving a feeling of ’emergency.’ The global framework of discourse is correlated with the local parameter and application.

AAO is organized by the non-profit organization 4Life Strategies. AAO’s concept and director is architect Lina Stergiou who also edited the book (see all contributors in files below).
